Brayana & Will’s Vineyard Wedding: DIY Wedding Flowers for Small Events

Late last summer, two people and those closest to them gathered in a Minnesota vineyard and were married in the sunshine. Brayana and Will had a ceremony outdoors and a very small reception both at Schram’s Winery — in COVID days, small is safer, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be special!

This couple was one of several of our clients who chose a combination of wedding design services. We offer full-service floral design and setup, an a la carte menu, and we can also curate flowers for you to decorate your event DIY style. While we don’t reccomend DIYing for large events, a casual or small event can be a good opportunity to play with flowers.

Brayana chose to hire us for her bouquet and purchase two buckets of flowers to decorate the tables for the reception. Here’s what she had to say about her experience:

What motivated you to go the DIY route for flowers?

[Brayana:] Because I wasn’t having a wedding party, I wanted to include/involve certain people in making my wedding special in other ways. So with my sister being very good with flowers, I decided to put her in charge of that! Also, of course I wanted to save money.

Where did you source supplies/materials from? Was it easy to find those places?

I got all the flowers from [Ediflorial], but we also gathered feathers and sticks from Alaska, where I’m from! I also collected glass bottles from Facebook marketplace for tables.

Were there any tutorials you watched online, or did you have experience arranging before?

My sister is very good with flowers, so I just showed her some pictures from Pinterest of what I was thinking, and she did the rest!

What was the most difficult part of DIYing flowers, the most fun part, and how did you feel about how they turned out?

The most difficult/stressful part would be the short timeframe I gave my sister to put all the flowers together. She did do some arrangements the night before with flowers from Amber, and then the rest of the flowers were put in jars or just layed on the tables within the hour before the ceremony. Even though the tight timeframe was stressful, the most exciting and fun part of the flowers was seeing my sister’s beautiful finished product!

What would you tell future couples interested in DIYing flowers for their wedding day?

If you have a special person with flower experience that you would love to involve, you should do it!

Shoutout to Sea Circus Weddings for capturing their wedding at Schram’s Vineyards so beautifully!
